Maajaam

Maajaam is a farm for art and tech situated in South of Estonia. It is concentrated on researching of, experimenting with and reflecting on the relationships between people, technology and nature. Substituting the urban environment with a hilly rural landscape allows us to observe technology in it’s pure form. Mixing the past technological wonders of the historical farm with present day hi-tech offers us a shift in perspective. This perspective is projected through the prism of art.

Memopol-1

Memopol is a machine that maps the visitor’s information field. By inserting an identification document such as a national ID-card or passport into the machine, it starts collecting information about the visitor from (inter)national databases and the Internet. The data is then visualized on a large-scale custom display. People using the machine will be remembered by their names and portraits.

Tintinnebula

Tintinnebula is inspired by the music of Arvo Pärt who went to school in Rakvere. The name refers to way of composing Arvo Pärt invented (Tintinnabuli), but also to a nebula - a collection of stars. The cymbals are full of potential energy, but mostly silent waiting for the right moment. The sound of cymbals is heard when the wind grows stronger and the rain drops start making the sound of tinn-tinn. It welcomes the visitor to take a break and enjoy the silence.

Estonian National Museum

Estonian National Museum opened it’s new building in 2016. “Encounters” is one of two permanent exhibitions in the building featuring 3600m2 of exhibition space. I was commisioned to develop and design a series of physical interactive multimedia exhibits spread around the whole exhibition. Heavy and everlasting materials of concrete, glass and iron are mixed with ephemeral layers of projections, sounds and electronics. The mix of different physical and virtual materials create a strong physical experience conveying the messages from the past and allows traveling on the historic timeline. 20 new installations were created together with curators and scientists of the museum.

Wind Poetry is a kinetic sculpture that works with wind power. The shape of a book is filled with 480 black and white “wind pixels”. The pages get filled with unlimited number of graphic patterns according the the emotions of the wind.

“Hall of fame” is an installation that calculates visitor’s potential to be an artist. It uses national ID-card or passport as means of interaction and physical billboard with projected information. Private information and portrait from the document. This is the way visitor can put oneself on the Hall of Fame (if one is “artistic” enough to compete). The billboard starts a sequence showing the statistics gathered and calculated about the person. The animated sequence is projected on paper or spatial objects on the billboard.

At first I felt that this text should deal with machines and the way they affect people, or more precisely, with what we think about communicating with machines. Already a long time ago we accepted the fact that the world will not only become filled with machines, but that it is also satiated with them. For over a hundred years we have been living side by side with machines; more machines than we can possibly imagine are coming off the production lines every day. No matter where we look, we can always see some more or less functioning machine standing there, doing something. We should be accustomed to them to the point of tediousness. But we are not. MEMOПOЛ-I is a machine that can demonstrate that we are not used to machines at all. And perhaps it will also show us why.

Eesti kaasaegse kunsti muuseumis lõppes muuseumi teine ametlik näitus „Midagi on valesti”, kus esinesid Eesti kunstiakadeemia fotograafia eriala III kursuse tudengid ja mille eest võttis, nagu ka esimesel korral, kureeriva vastutuse Marco Laimre. Näitus oli ootuspäraselt sotsiaalne, traagiline, pani kaasa mõtlema ja tundma, osutas ühiskonna vaiksetele valupunktidele. Noored fotograafid rääkisid sotsiaalsetele stereotüüpidele allumatusest (Sigrid Viir), panustasid ühiskonna ebausklikkusele (Kristiina Hansen), visualiseerisid raudkindla nelikmõrva liikluslolluse läbi (üks kõvemaid töid üldse! Karel Koplimets), otsisid vaevumärgatavaid hälbeid argiümbruses (Laura Toots, Krõõt Tarkmeel, Helina Kõrm, Tanel Rannala). Kunstnikud leidsid valesti olevat avalikkusest ja otsisid tasakaalupunkti, kus kõik õige oleks, enda seest.

Elektrosauna creates an immersive experience of the technological trash that we consume for very small amount of time and discard for something new. The e-waste is transported to developing countries and we have no knowledge what happens to it. Elektrosauna hides it in the small cabin, but unveils everything when the visitor enters.

Kurjakuulutavat signaali «error» edastab mulle iga päev minu vana kokkujooksvate juhtmetega PC. Sama signaali edastas ka Kiwa kureeritud noortenäitus Vaalas. Tahaksin arvuti järjekordse hääleka veateate peale aknast välja visata. Nõme, vastik, arusaamatu toanurgas surisev hall kast. Ma ei mõista teda ja ma vihkan teda selle eest: vihkan tema arusaamatuid tujusid ja mõttetuid pretensioone.

Some of your projects are about the implementation of misbehavior in certain human-machine relationships, immanently expressing the way machines work. How much do you think we need “transparency” in machines in order to have healthy communication with them?

As fast as digital technology has come closer to our daily lives we have to work hard that it would be transparent. If we think of older technologies, for example a hammer it’s pretty transparent. Our minds and bodies could easily understand that you can use it for several purposes like hitting a nail or smashing a window. Our newer technologies are too complex for a similar approach thus we have to always work to keep them understandable and under control. The misuse of technology is too easy if the general public does not understand it and will be used against people. My work tries to open up this dialog by presenting machines that have hidden agendas that people themselves will expose.

Looduses liikumist vaadates tundub, nagu oleks parv üks organism, millel on oma eesmärgid ja suund. Teadlased on avastanud, et parves tegutsemisel ei ole üks-pluss-üks lihtsalt kaks, vaid tulemuseks võib olla midagi palju suuremat. Kalaparves elamisel on mitmeid eeliseid. Kalad liiguvad teiste loodud voolus kergemini, saavad kiskjatest kiiremini teada, leiavad toitu tõhusamalt ning neil on rohkem võimalusi partneri leidmiseks. Kõigil kaladel on sarnased huvid. Hea kommunikatsioon aitab tagada, et terve parv suudab ellu jääda. Sarnast emergentsust - koostöö ja keerukuse tekkimist näeme kõikjal looduses. Näiteks lumehelveste moodustumisel, inimeste teadvuse tekkimisel neuronite koostöös või galaktikate tekkimisel. Kui vaatame linnuparvi taevas, tekib küsimus – kas ka nemad peavad parve suuna leidmiseks kaklema, nagu inimesed tihti oma eesmärkide nimel teevad?

Köler Prize

Külastasin Köler Prize’i nimelise kunstiauhinna nominentide näitust Eesti Kaasaegse Kunsti Muuseumis. Eesti esimese kõrgharidusega kunstniku järgi nimetatud auhind antakse sel aastal välja esmakordselt ja seda 2011. aasta Euroopa Kultuuripealinna raames. Preemia on Eesti mõistes innovaatiline, sest see jagatakse alles pärast seda, kui näitusel eksponeeritud tööd on enam kui kuu aega avalikkuse pilgu all olnud. Eelmainitud lihtne asjaolu muudab kogu valimisprotsessi interaktiivsemaks ning annab publikupreemia näol osalusvõimaluse ka kunstivõhikutele, kes vastasel juhul end taolise auhinna väljaandmisest absoluutselt puudutatuna ei tunneks. Köler Prize’i eesmärk ongi populariseerida kaasaegset kunsti ning tõmmata tähelepanu meie andekatele noortele kunstnikele, ja kuigi olin laupäeva pärastlõunal praktiliselt ainus näituse külastaja, olen kindel, et tulevikus see ka õnnestub: ega Roomatki ei ehitatud ühe päevaga.

Külastasin EKKM-s toimuvat Köler Prize 2011 nominentide näitust. See auhind antakse Tallinna Kultuuripealinna raames välja esmakordselt sel aastal. Auhinnale nomineeriti Eesti Kaasaegse Kunsti Muuseumi poolt viis kaasaegse eesti kunsti tõusvat tähte – Dénes Kalev Farkas, Tõnis Saadoja, Timo Toots, Sigrid Viir, Jevgeni Zolotko. Nominentide näitusel saab läbi kahe töö kerge läbilõike nende viimaste aastate loomingust. Tööd, milledest esimene on varem avalikult juba eksponeeritud, teine aga valmib spetsiaalselt Köler Prize’i jaoks, valisid kunstnikud ise.

Kevadises Tallinnas on ilu ja müstikat – seega on vägagi tõenäoline, et ühel ilusal päeval kannavd jalad sind jutkui iseenesest mõnda erkordsesse paika. Nõnda juhtus minugagi, kui leidsin end ühtäkki seismas Linnahalli lähedal, ümbritsetuna robustsetest mahajäetud tehasehooneetest, mis kandsid endas möödunud aegade hõngu. Kuigi esmapilgul võib tunduda, nagu elaks see osa Tallinnast ikka veel minevikus, tuleb tõdeda, et tegelikult on just see sama paik kõige uuenduslikumate tulevikuideede kodu, mis arvatavasti loovad aastate pärast aluse meie igapäevafilosoofiale. Jah, olete tõepoolest sattunud Eesti Kaasaaegse Kunsti Muuseumi ning teie ees on Köler Prize 2011 nominendid: Dénes Kalev Farkas, Tõnis Saadoja, Timo Toots, Sigrid Viir ja Jevgeni Zolotko.

Lifting the Urban Environment

The urban installation festival, LIFT 11, has been taking place in Tallinn since the beginning of May and will go on until September 12; it is part of the program celebrating Tallinn as the European Capital of Culture for the year 2011. Media bubble doesn’t blow up without a consumer, the installation doesn’t work without the visitor. To make the media field buzzing, to create scandals and little stars, one has to move oneself. You have to type in c**.com or order newyorktimes, you have to pick up the remote control or tune in to FM wavelength. In this installation you have to make contact to the wooden plate, to make the information steams flow over you. It doesn’t matter, what kind of information that is, it just has to be warm. Media bubble is around You, without You it’s non-existent.

I had to open a new personal e-mail account recently, an action one rarely does these days. A long time has gone by since I signed up for my previous one. I was shocked at the harsh reality of privacy violations. When syncing the new e-mail account in my smartphone, the mail exchange app wanted access to a massive amount of my personal information, literally every piece of data there was on my phone, including my gender, my image files and of course my contacts: e-mails and phone numbers, among many other things. Why on earth would an e-mail app need to know my gender or have access to the images on my smartphone? Of course, I was politely reassured in a brief sentence that I could change these privacy settings at any given time after I had completed the registration process.

The installation is a surveillance system for ants. It is over-the-top version of a nature camera. It has microphones wired in ant’s nest, sensors monitoring the climate inside and outside of the nest, camera watching over the little society of the ants. Artist statement

In my artworks and other creative projects, I constantly keep an eye on the developments of our society, noticing changes in everyday life. Growing up in the system of the Soviet Union, going through the crazy 90s and also seeing the beginning of this century, there have been a lot of changes. Technological development has affected us almost imperceptibly, fusing us and technology more and more together. Many of the inventions from the science fiction books of my childhood have become commonplace and we have become cybernetic people.

Neljapäeval toimub Tartus taas tavalisest tähelepanuväärsema kunstinäituse avamine, mille tähtsust märgib küll ka pealinnast kunstisõprade saabumine eribussiga, veel rohkem aga väljapaneku sisu. Timo Toots (40) on kunstimaja kõikides ekspositsiooniruumidesse vaatamiseks seadnud valiku oma teostest, mis on valminud 15 aasta jooksul.
